Division Goal
This level is all about fundamentals (and having fun!). Throwing, catching, field positions, base running, and proper hitting mechanics. When a girl completes her third year in the Freshmen Division, she should be able to:
Throw overhand accurately with some power, proper mechanics
Have good hitting mechanics, stance, balance, hands to ball, etc.
Assume and maintain defensive ready position
Catch a thrown ball
Field a ground ball using 2 handsRun through first base correctly
Demonstrate basic knowledge of defensive position play
Demonstrate basic knowledge of the rules
Practice Organization
Set objectives and have a plan. Come to every practice with a plan. Well-run softball practices should achieve at least three objectives:
Improve players’ basic skills in throwing, fielding, hitting, and base running
Provide opportunities for players to execute the basic and advanced skills in game-like situations
Improve players’ skills with repetition of drills. Repetition of skills is the best way to get your players to perform better. Repetition of correct fundamentals captivates interest.
