Code of Conduct

The conduct of coaches sets the tone for the game and reflects on the league. Your job as a coach is to teach and encourage. You must be responsive to and fair with your players, their parents, and the other team and its coaches. It’s a wonderful opportunity to be a positive role model in a child’s life.

Milton Girls Softball is serious about these rules, and will enforce them in the interest of ensuring a good experience for all girls, parents and coaches. If the conduct of any coach fails to meet the standards outlined here, he or she may be relieved of his/her duties and replaced at the discretion of the Milton Girls Softball Executive Board of Directors.

Coaches must not be making calls prior to the umpire making a call.
This is not only unsportsmanlike conduct but in the case of younger umpires can actually influence their calls.

Coaches must not argue calls, or publicly criticize calls.
Questions to clarify a call or a ruling are permitted, provided it is done in a courteous, professional and non-confrontational manner in between innings.

Be positive toward your players with respect to their
performance.

Comments like “How many times have I told you to stay in front of the ball” are not acceptable. “Try to remember to get your body in front of the ball” or “nice try – next time stay in front of the ball” serves the same purpose.

Coaches must not engage in negative cheering or criticism of performance or abilities of opposing players.
Comments such as “she can’t hit the ball, just throw strikes” are unacceptable. “Just throw strikes; don’t worry about what happens if she hits it” carries the same message.

Coaches are expected to rotate players among positions.
In particular, relegating weaker fielders to outfield positions is not permitted. Each girl should play at least two innings in the outfield and two innings in the infield.

The use of any alcohol or tobacco products at practices or games is strictly prohibited.
