Overview of Programs

The purpose of Milton Girls Softball (MGS) is to provide softball opportunities for the girls of the Milton community by establishing 1) a recreational softball league and game schedule, and 2) competitive girls fast pitch softball teams to compete locally with other towns in the region.

The Milton Girls Softball Spring Season is open to girls in Kindergarten through Grade 8 who reside in or attend school in Milton. The season runs from late April to the end of the school year. New softball players are welcome in all divisions as this is an instructional and recreational program, yet competitive enough for all players in town.

There are five divisions:

K Program

An instructional program where emphasis is placed on the basics: how to wear a glove, how to grip a ball, how to throw, how to catch a ball, how to hold a bat, how to swing, how to run the bases.

Freshwomen / Grade 1-2

An instructional league where Coaches toss easy pitches to batters and score is not kept. No called strikes. No umpires. There is typically one weekend game and one weeknight game each week.

Sophomore / Grades 3-4

Focuses on the fundamentals of pitching, hitting, throwing, and catching. Girls learn the rules of softball by playing game conditions. High school varsity girls umpire and call balls and strikes. Most regular softball rules apply. Two or three games/practices per week.

Junior / Grades 5-6

Most regular softball rules apply, but base stealing is not allowed. ASA Umpires call balls and strikes. Two or three games/practices per week.

Senior / Grades 7-8

Incoming 7th graders and new players to the league are drafted onto teams to ensure competitive balance. ASA umpires call balls and strikes. Most regular softball rules apply. Two or three games or practices per week.

Guidelines on Playing Time

Some basic guidelines for the recreational league include “fairly” distributed playing time for all players and access to all playing positions, with a coach’s concern for a player’s safety. The recreational league provides various clinics to further player skills. Although Milton Girls Softball strongly supports grade appropriate competition and development, there are occasions when a player has been allowed to play up in an older division. This approval is not taken lightly and is only granted after safety concerns, skill level, and social skills are all discussed with the player and the family.

As a coach, it is your obligation to accept players of all ages as equal members of the team. Younger girls playing up must have equal playing time and the same opportunity as teammates to experience different positions.

It is the goal of the league to educate the girls of the Milton community the ideals of good sportsmanship, team play, honesty, courage, and respect for others. Milton Girls Softball provides an environment that remains sensitive to the physical and emotional well-being of the girls.
